"Clouds"
For centuries, native cultures around the world have used variations of a dyeing technique called resist or space dyeing. Gregory Newham began hand-dyeing yarns in the 1970’s and over the succeeding years evolved the “Clouds” design (Parish-Hadley of New York commissioned the first rugs in this technique).
A labor intensive, step-by-step process, combining controlled hand dyeing and handweaving creates the effect shown in these images. A watery, diagonally moving series of shading makes a diamond lattice effect in a flat, tight weave carpet wool surface. |
